About Ballyvaughan
Ballyvaughan is a small coastal town located in County Clare, Ireland. Originally it was founded around the Ballyvaughan Castle, which was owned and run by the O'Loghlen family. Unfortunately the Ballyvaughan Castle fell upon hard times and was completely in ruins by 1840. Today Cottages stand where the castle use to be.
Ballyvaughan was best known for its two fishing ports in the 19th century. Ballyvaughan was one of the biggest exporters for grain, bacon and vegetables to Galway. It was even named the capital of County Clare for a short while. Slowly the famous fishing piers became less and less useful as the roadways became more accessible till they were only used for personal fishing boats.
Today the town is best known as a tourist spot for its prime location. This quaint little town of around 258 inhabitants is nestled right on Galway Bay. It also is known for its unique landscape known as The Burren. It is in close proximity to other attractions such as The Cliffs of Moher, Aillwee Caves, Burren Birds of Prey, Burren College of Art and much more. The area also has many activities to offer such as hiking, rock climbing, spelunking, fishing and more.
