A school, a castle and the Burren all in one place!
The Burren College of Art was established in 1993 by Michael Greene and Mary Hawkes-Greene. Michael Greene wanted to create a school where creatives could come and experience and make their art in the beautiful Burren countryside. He also hoped that the school would help the surrounding area of Ballyvaughan and the community. Mary Hawkes-Greene is now the president of the non-profit college. Internationally recognized the Burren College of Art specializes in undergraduate study abroad mostly from the United States and Canada. The Burren College of Art is associated with 40 different colleges in the United States and Canada. The college also offers a Master in Fine Art program that is credited by the National University of Ireland in Galway. Besides being a college the campus is built around a 16th century castle! The Newtown Castle is one of few cylindrical fortified tower houses in the area. This castle is open to students to get inspiration and even exhibit work! It is also open to visitors and used as a venue for the colleges graduation and even weddings. Students staying the semester are housed at the Lodge at Burren College of Art. This nice lodge backing up to pastures and a beautiful full of a mountain is only a 10 minute walk from the school.
