Poulnabrone Dolmen

Dating back to around 3800BC this historic monument is ancient!

The Poulnabrone Dolmen is an ancient portal tomb, one out of about 172 in Ireland! About a 15 minute drive outside of Ballyvaughan this tomb dates all the way back to the Neolithic period. The top stone is about 12 foot long and is supported by two 6 foot stones. In 1985 a crack was found in the stone and archeologist took this opportunity to excavate the grave underneath the stones. They found bones belonging to about 21 different people buried in the main grave. Thanks to radiocarbon dating we were able to find out that the bones were buried there somewhere between 3800-3200BC. The bones are now exhibited in the Clare Museum in Ennis.
