St. Brigid's Well

Updated: Jan 14, 2019

This quiet, mysterious area is definitely worth the stop!

St. Brigid's Well is a short drive down the road from the Cliffs of Moher. It is a well, courtyard and cemetery shaded by some low hanging trees. St. Brigid's statue is the first thing to greet you when you walk into a little circular courtyard. You'll find the entrance to your left through a narrow white arch. This area is filled with rocks, pictures, notes and lots of rags and bits of clothing. The rag tree tradition has its roots in Ireland. It is thought that if you take a piece of clothing from a person who is sick and tie it to a tree that as the cloth rots the person will be healed. You will find the upper courtyard and cemetery are covered by rags, hair ties, ribbon and pretty much any other fabric you can think of.

Besides being a popular tourist stop because of its close proximity to the Cliffs of Moher, St. Brigid's Well is a very significant place for local travelers. Travelers are nomadic people in Ireland who strongly believe that this well has healing capabilities. Walking through the courtyards and into the well itself I can't help but feel a sort of serenity. The sound of running water, the chirping of birds and reading through peoples notes and seeing different objects people have decided to leave is very intriguing and a calming experience. You can also see O'Brien's Monument from the courtyard of the well (Bottom right picture).
